In a dramatic crackdown, the Malaysian federal police, acting on a tip-off from Pahang royalty, have dismantled a major syndicate involved in the illegal e-waste trade. The operation led by Bukit Aman’s Anti-Money Laundering division and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Secretariat Unit uncovered a network of unlicensed e-waste processing plants in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, and Johor.
These clandestine operations were illegally importing and processing electronic waste, turning it into valuable metal ingots, and exporting them overseas, raking in millions of US dollars in illicit profits. Some of these illegal factories were found to be hidden within oil palm plantations and deep within forest reserves, operating covertly under the cover of night to avoid detection.
The coordinated raids resulted in 55 arrests, including locals and skilled foreign workers. The police seized assets worth almost USD 10 million (RM43 million), a significant blow to the syndicate’s operations. Investigations are now ongoing to discover exactly how these factories were able to operate without detection by local authorities.

Asia Should Not Be The World’s Dumping Ground
The case brings to light a critical issue that cannot be ignored: Asia, particularly developing nations like Malaysia, should not be treated as the world’s dumping ground for e-waste. The region has become a magnet for illegal e-waste disposal due to lower labour costs and more lenient environmental regulations. But this short-sighted and dangerous approach places the burden of global pollution on the backs of nations already struggling with their own environmental challenges.
Threats Posed by the Mishandling of E-Waste
Improper disposal of e-waste – such as dumping it in rivers, landfills, or sending it to illegal facilities for processing – can significantly harm human health and the environment. There are too many threats associated:
- Toxic Emissions: Improper methods such as incineration, can release toxic substances into the environment and the air we breathe. Inhaling these toxins can lead to cardiovascular disease, breathing difficulties and other health issues.
- Health Risks for Workers: Workers associated with the improper disposal of e-waste are subject to serious health issues, as long-term exposure to these toxins can cause neurological disorders and lead poisoning.
- Contamination of Water Sources: Toxic components from e-waste can contaminate water used for crop irrigation, leading to their entry into the food chain.
- Groundwater Pollution: The toxic substances from e-waste can seep into groundwater, contaminating drinking water sources and directly endangering public health.
- Loss of Resources: Improper disposals lead to the loss of materials such as gold, silver, and rare earth elements found in e-waste, which in turn necessitates additional mining, thus increasing environmental pollution.

Considering the multitude of risks associated with improper disposals, there is no better solution than entrusting old electronics to reliable ITAD vendors.
The Urgent Need for Sustainable Solutions to Process E-Waste
The ongoing struggle against illegal e-waste operations highlights the urgent need for sustainable solutions. The clearing of e-waste must be done responsibly even when outsourced to regions like Southeast Asia. While the Malaysian government has undoubtedly been taking action to curb this illegal e-waste problem, there is certainly still a need for more sustainable solutions. Considering the multitude of risks associated with improper disposals, there is no better solution than entrusting old electronics to reliable ITAD vendors.
ITAD vendors with the appropriate certifications and licenses will prioritise adherence to the Environmental Quality Act 1974 regulations by processing these electronics responsibly and ensuring that e-waste is disposed of safely, securely, and sustainably.
